Reggae is Still King and among the Top Ten most listened-to music Globally.

A recent study found that reggae is one of the top ten types of music that people all over the world listen to. According to the results of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, (IFPI) Music Engaging With Music Report 2022, 34,000 people from 18 countries said that they usually listen to more than 500 different types of music. This shows how rich and varied the music scene is around the world, with a wide range of genres that are popular in different places and with different people.


A demographically representative sample of the online population between the ages of 16 and 64 was used for the study, which was conducted in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, 16 to 44-year-olds in China, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria participated in the study.

Overall, the IFPI Music Engaging With Music Report found that people listen to an average of 8 genres of music. However, this number is higher among those who are most engaged with music, such as those who subscribe to audio streaming and those who buy vinyl. Both of these groups listen to an average of 9 genres of music.


These findings highlight the diverse and varied tastes of music listeners worldwide and the many different popular genres among different groups of people.


The study found that local styles of music are popular all over the world, and that each region and country has its own unique musical styles and traditions.

The study identified over 500 different genres of music that are enjoyed by music fans around the world, including pop, rock, hip-hop/rap, dance/electronic, Latin, classical/opera, R&B, soundtracks, country, and reggae.


These genres were among the top 10 favourite genres globally, although the specific rankings varied by region. For example, in Brazil, the top three genres were pop, rock, and hip-hop/rap, while in Nigeria, the top 3 genres were Afrobeats, sertanejo, and gospel. In Mexico, the top 3 genres were norteño, samba/pogade, and gospel, while in India, the top 3 genres were pahari folk, classical/opera, and hip-hop/rap.

Reggae is popular in many territories including Jamaica, Hawaii and the United States.

Reggae music is also popular in other parts of the world, such as Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is frequently associated with ideas of social justice, political action, and cultural pride, which contributes to its international popularity.


There many reggae bands and artist who have amassed a massive fan base. they included Chronixx, Koffee, Kabaka Pyramid, Queen Omega, Marlon Asha, Rebelution, UB40, Mano Choa, Jr Gong Marley, Tommorow People, Alpha Blondy, J Derobie, Maoli, J Boogs and many more. Bob Marley the king of reggae has 13,938,108 monthly listeners on Spotify. Additionally, he continues to rule the Billboard Charts. "Legend", his best-selling album, also landed at No. 9 on the Year-End Top R&B Albums chart (down from No. 6 last year) and No. 41 on the Year-End Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (down from No. 32 last year).




Overall, these findings highlight the diversity and variety of music enjoyed by people around the world and the many local genres popular in different regions. Reggae which originated in Jamaica, is among the most consumed music worldwide, a fantastic achievement for a great little island.
